I was intrigued by the story of Motu o Kura, Bare Island in Hawke's Bay. It is said that Kura, a mighty woman who, during times of siege, would dive down to obtain fresh water from the aquifer behind the island under the ocean, which made Motu o Kura a safe haven or sanctuary. This story was the inspiration behind the painting.
